Conisbrough Castle's unique keep has been dramatically re-presented as part of a major Heritage Lottery Funded project, and the site is now open to the public.
The lofty 12th century keep of this very well-preserved building, now complete with its restored roof and floors, is a magnificent sight. It had a major role to play in the Wars of the Roses, was once owned by Richard of York and even featured in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe.
English Heritage has given this 12th century castle the latest in 21st century presentations. The keep’s three floors are inhabited by wall-projected, larger than life characters who talk to visitors, a range of audio visuals, and display panels in ‘graphic novel’ style. These tell the story of Hamelin, who built the current castle, and his wife Isabel.
Visitors will also receive a first class welcome in the castle’s brand new visitor centre.
